Calibrating the Spray Module

This article explains how to calibrate a spray module on AX-1, ensuring it sprays exactly where intended. It outlines the steps for placing test targets, adjusting nozzle offsets and verifying the results

Accurate spraying is essential for consistent weed control. If you’ve replaced a spray module or notice that it’s not hitting the correct spot, you can follow these steps to align the spray pattern. This process ensures that each nozzle targets precisely where it should, reducing wasted chemicals and improving overall performance.

1. Prepare Your Workspace

  1. Use a flat, preferably dry surface—packed soil, a piece of cardboard or similar even area.
  2. Gather some green, elongated leaves or plants (e.g., grass) that you can lay out horizontally, vertically, and diagonally to the robot’s path.
Why this matters: A flat surface and clear targets help you accurately judge where the spray lands.

2. Position the Target Objects

Place your leaves or plants on the ground where the robot will pass. Place them in the orientations horizontal, vertical, and diagonal so it’s easy to see how the spray lines up from all angles.

3. Run the Setup Wizard

  1. Open the menu (the hamburger icon) and select Start.
  2. Go through the entire setup process as usual.
  3. Do not start autonomous operation at the end. Instead, exit the wizard before this step.

4. Perform a Test Spray

  1. Switch to Manual Controls (steering wheel).
  2. Set the cruise control to a moderate speed (about halfway).

  3. Let the robot drive over the test objects for spraying.
  4. Stop the robot once you’ve applied spray to the leaves on the ground.
Why this matters: Observing the spray on real targets shows you exactly where adjustments are needed.

5. Check the Spray Alignment

Look at where the spray lands relative to your test leaves. Note any differences in horizontal or vertical alignment. It is also possible to observe the difference through the camera lense.

6. Nozzle calibration

  1. Go to settings -> Spraying -> Nozzle Hitpoint Calibration

    Setting - Spraying
    Hitpoint

  2. Open the Spray Module drop-down and select the module you want to calibrate.
  3. Use the four arrow buttons (up, down, left and right) to move that module’s hitpoint in the direction it needs to go to land on the target. The red crosshair shows the hitpoint’s current position, and each press shifts it by one small step.
  4. When the hitpoint is where you want it, tap Save.
  5. Repeat the select → adjust → save process for any other module that needs correcting.

Why this matters: Each module is calibrated independently, so make sure the correct one is selected in the drop-down before you adjust.

Calibration

7. Verify and Repeat if Necessary

Perform another test spray. If the pattern still needs refinement, adjust the offsets again until you’re satisfied with the accuracy. Remember to Save when you are adjusting the hitpoint.

Why this matters: Small offsets can significantly improve spray accuracy, ensuring the robot targets weeds effectively.

You’ve now calibrated your spray module. This helps maintain precise weed targeting, minimizes chemical waste, and ensures you get the best possible results from your robot.
